I got a pretty good night of sleep, strangely enough, and persuaded Anna to go get breakfast in the village. I’d made up my mind not to worry about the Galley. It would be fine. It wasn’t my business. I would only try to figure out what happened to Reggie, my friend, who had entrusted me with some items that were still in my care. That was my only responsibility.

It was a perfect morning on the lake. We took the boat to the village and I had my heart set on a nice morning at the coffee shop. I would have a pour over coffee, a breakfast sandwich, and I’d read the local paper and soak up the 72-degree weather and the mild mountain breeze.

We were doing just that – I was sitting there with Anna, perusing the police blotter for the mountain area, and laughing about the silly crimes that people report up there. How quaint, I thought. How nice to live in a place where a missing dog is the only thing people have to worry about. Anna was texting all morning, and life was grand. And then as I looked up I saw a familiar man across the street in a group of people. It was the Mayor. I’d only met him once, at this coffee shop, but I knew it was him. He and a group of five or six men and women had just come out of an office together and were shaking hands. Then he and a woman walked a short way away to his car together and got in. It wasn’t until they got to the car and she looked straight at him to ask a question that I got a good look at her face.

It was the girl I’d seen with Reggie – the night he died.

“Look,” I whispered to Anna. She looked up from the phone. “Over there – at the car.”

She was just getting into the car, and all Anna could see was the mayor.

“Who’s that?”

“That’s the mayor. And that’s the girl we saw with Reggie that night.”

“What? Are you serious?”

The car started, and they did a u-turn, and the car passed right in front of us. Anna looked in the passenger window.

“Hmmm,” she said. “Yeah, it could be. But I don’t know. It could also be someone else.”

“Maybe I was imagining it,” I said, but I didn’t believe that. I knew what I saw.
